About Children provides play, drama and art therapy services for children and families in Cumbria and Lancashire.

We have a range of specialist approaches relevant to children who have had experiences of trauma.

About Children work with children and their carers, whether living in the residential sector or with their families. We have two therapy rooms in our Kendal base. However, we can provide therapy in a number of different settings appropriate to the child's needs.

About Children is a registered Adoption Support Agency approved by Ofsted (Registration no. SC431970). We are therefore able to provide a range of therapeutic services for adopted children and their families. We are particularly interested in working jointly with children and their adoptive parents in order to help the development of a secure attachment.

Supervision and Consultation

In order to ensure that we provide a safe and effective service for the children, carers and agencies with whom we work, we have the following supervisory and consultation arrangements:

Lesley is supervised by Tess Bailey-Sayer, B.Ed (Cantab) who is a Senior Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist. She has a Diploma in Psychoanalytic Observational Studies.

The Associate Therapists are supervised by Lesley Ritchie.

In addition to the above we have quarterly consultation with Dr Renee Marks who is a qualified therapist and social worker with many years experience in working with children and families who have experienced trauma and abuse. She has a particular interest (and runs training) in working with children with dissociative tendencies. Renee Marks has also undertaken Advanced EMDR training.

Organisation History

About Children Ltd was set up by former NSPCC staff Kim Baker, Judy Filmore and Lesley Ritchie when, in March 2010, the NSPCC closed its therapeutic services in South Cumbria. We provided a service for children in the looked after system, including adopted children and those living in residential care.

As a result of the NSPCC closure and its decision to concentrate on major urban centres, we decided to set up an independent company in April 2010. We felt it was important to try and ensure that children with difficult life experiences should continue to receive appropriate therapy/help. In addition it gave us the opportunity to widen the scope of our activities by offering a service to children and their families in the community.

Judy left the company in June 2013.

Kim Baker retired in August 2014.
